Weekly Soccer Recap: West Ham Try to Break Leverkusen’s Unbeaten Streak, Prem Race Heating Up

Written by Landon Livernois

April 9, 2024

There are only around 8 weeks left in the European soccer seasons, and with it some interesting title races have come to our attention. The Premier League title race is getting closer, and Leverkusen’s unbeaten run could be in jeopardy against reigning Conference League winners West Ham.

Premier League Title Race + Everton Point Deduction

The race for the Premier League title race is as close as ever, with the top 3 being only 1 point apart. Arsenal are at the top of the table, on 71 points in 31 games, with Liverpool being even on points in the same amount of matches. Manchester City have also played 31 matches, and they currently sit on 70 points. At the other end of the table, Everton have received a 2-point deduction to add on to their 10-point deduction, which was lowered to 6 points after appeal. Everton now sit in 16th place, only 2 points above the relegation zone.

Bayer Leverkusen Still Unbeaten in All Competitions

The story of the season is coming from Leverkusen, Germany, with Bayer Leverkusen making history under manager Xabi Alonso. Xabi has been linked with the Bayern Munich and Liverpool job, with both of their managers leaving at the end of the season. The surprising thing is this is his first full managerial season after an illustrious career highlighted by his time at Real Madrid. Their squad is filled with superstars like Grimaldo, Jeremie Frimpong, Victor Boniface, and Florian Wirtz. Their Europa League quarter-final opponent is reigning Conference League champions West Ham United. West Ham have had starlets show themselves this year, featuring players like Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus. In my opinion, I think West Ham have a chance to end Leverkusen’s unbeaten run.
