The Africa Cup of Nations is easily one of the most thrilling soccer competitions in 2024. With that, let’s recap the group stages of AFCON.
Group A
1: Equatorial Guinea
2: Nigeria
3: Ivory Coast
4: Guinea-Bissau
What a performance from Equatorial Guinea! Many people had Nigeria and Ivory Coast progressing easily, but Ivory Coast’s future is still up in the air because of the great performances from Equatorial Guinea.
Group B
1: Cape Verde
2: Egypt
3: Ghana
4: Mozambique
Upset Alert! Upset number 2 comes in the form of Cape Verde coming 1st in a group with eight-time champions Egypt and a Ghana side who were one of the favorites to win the competition. Egypt does go through on a second place, while Ghana’s future also lies up in the air.
Group C
1: Senegal
2: Cameroon
3: Guinea
4: Gambia
This group went pretty much as expected, with defending champion Senegal coming first, followed by Cameroon. Not many people expected much from Guinea or Gambia.
Group D
1: Angola
2: Burkina Faso
3: Algeria
4: Mauritania
This group hasn’t ended as of the writing of this article, but Algeria being in 3rd place is still a surprise, nonetheless. Let’s see how this group ends.
Group E
1: Mali
2: South Africa
3: Namibia
4: Tunisia
This group also hasn’t concluded, but another upset may be on the cards. Tunisia, who qualified for the World Cup 2022, are 4th in a group that includes Mali and Namibia, two teams that were nowhere near the favorites to win the competition.
Group F
1: Morocco
2: Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
3: Zambia
4: Tanzania
This group again has not finished, but it is going as expected. Morocco is one of the teams that are favorited to win the competition, and it looks like they have a chance.
